The course is a 4-mile loop, held entirely on the Portland International Raceway property. The majority of the course is flat, with just a couple of slight rises and descents. Half of the course is paved, the other half is packed gravel (road shoes are appropriate). The route leaves the exchange zone, passes the music stage and bonfire, and runs along tree-lined paths, wildlife preserves and waterways. Look for wildlife and waterfowl as you run on the elevated dike along the Columbia River Slough. Leaving the dike and re-entering the P.I.R. parking areas, you'll hear the beat of the music beckoning you back to the team area. At the end of each lap, runners ascend and descend the stairs of the pedestrian overpass. Each lap is punctuated by a final sprint along the track's drag strip to the Pit Row Exchange Zone.
The exchange zone is a crazy place to be, where the madness and pandemonium of the baton exchange takes place. Hang out in the team area to cheer on your teammates (and competition), and experience one of the most exciting things about the relay experience.
Half MarathonRunners in the Half Marathon or Half Marathon Relay will use the same course as the 8 Track Relay. Participants running it as a half marathon relay team will each run 3 equal legs of the event. The exchange zones will be clearly marked.
