Description
This Fun Run will be 2 laps around the path at the Earlywine park (3 miles). It is not a sanctioned or certified race and official timing will not be provided. It is just an event for fun to show our support to Karen battling Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) and her wish to end ALS by supporting the work of ALS TDI, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.

Parking at the Earlywine YMCA is not allowed unless you have a valid current membership. There are 3 separate areas within Earlywine park for parking. Please park inside the park. Entrance is from 119th street on the south end of the park.

Adult registration fee of $35 includes the yellow T-shirt with Karen's Kats logo on front and design on back. Children 12 and under the cost is $10 and includes a children's size shirt. Please list size from Children's S to L and Adult S to Adult XL. Larger sizes are available at additional cost. If you are not running, but would like to purchase a T-shirt, please do so at the products listed below.

Also every registered runner will have the opportunity to win a New Balance gift certificate. Additional chances will be available for a suggested donation of $5.

All proceeds from this run and t-shirt sales goes directly to ALS TDI, and $0.87 cents of every dollar goes directly to research.

Other Info
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually lead to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

ALS was first described in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn't until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease when he abruptly retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. Most commonly, the disease strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time. ALS has cut short the lives of other such notable and courageous individuals as Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter, U.S. Senator Jacob Javits, actors Michael Zaslow and David Niven, creator of Sesame Street Jon Stone, television producer Scott Brazil, boxing champion Ezzard Charles, NBA Hall of Fame basketball player George Yardley, pro football player Glenn Montgomery, golfer Jeff Julian, golf caddie Bruce Edwards, British soccer player Jimmy Johnstone, musician Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter), photographer Eddie Adams, entertainer Dennis Day, jazz musician Charles Mingus, composer Dimitri Shostakovich, former Vice President of the United States Henry A. Wallace, and U.S. Army General Maxwell Taylor.
