In April 2012, the TMA launched a nationwide Walk-Run-N-Roll campaign to increase awareness and funds for research and programs that further our understanding of these rare debilitating neuro-immune diseases of the central nervous system, such as Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, Neuromyelitis Optica, and Transverse Myelitis. Individuals can present with sensory alteration, weakness, and autonomic dysfunction including bowel and bladder problems. There is no prejudice with these rare neuro-immune disorders. These diseases affect adults and children alike. In 2012, six cities participated, more than 1000 people joined the campaign and it was a celebration of the resilience of the lives led, the care and commitment of caregivers and the passion and dedication of medical professionals focused on these diseases. While we raised awareness for these rare diseases that so unexpectedly rob so many people of their normal lives, many people who had never met another person living with this disease and were alone in their journey, were for the first time not alone. In June 2014, we will be hosting the Maryland TMA Walk-Run-N-Roll Awareness Campaign. Our fund raising goal of $15,000 will allow us to fund research and to demonstrate our support to the many individuals and families who struggle with these disorders. We ask for your help in reaching this goal by sponsoring our effort to raise awareness! The TMA, founded in 1994, is dedicated to the support of children, adolescents, and adults living with these diseases. The TMA currently supports approximately 10,000 members from more than 80 different countries. |
