Description
The Colorado Springs Half Marathon, presented by Penrose-St. Francis, is a loop course beginning & ending at Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs. The course will showcase the city of Colorado Springs by taking runners on Wood, Cascade, Plate Ave, through America the Beautiful Park, Monument Valley Park, around Memorial Park, by the Olympic Training Center & through downtown. A 5K run/walk is available for our shorter distance runners. This family friendly race is a premiere half marathon attracting people from 26 different states.

Location & DirectionsThe Colorado Springs Half Marathon will be held at Acacia Park in beautiful downtown Colorado Springs. Coming into Colorado Springs from the north on exit Uintah St. east and take a right on Nevada Ave. Coming from the south on I-25 exit Nevada/Tejon exit north on Nevada Ave. Acacia Park is at the corner of Nevada and Platte Ave. There is garage parking at the corner of Nevada Ave and Kiowa St or Nevada Ave and Colorado Ave for one dollar.

Packet Pick Up: Packet Pickup will be available Friday, Saturday, and race morning. Location and time to be determined (check the race website as the date approaches www.spreeracing.com/coshalf). 



Course - Half MarathonBeginning and ending in Acacia Park, the half marathon will head south on Tejon St, west on Colorado Ave and drop into America the Beautiful Park. From there the route will head north on the Greenway Trail through Monument Valley Park. The Greenway Trail is approximately 15 feet wide, cement fro the first mile and hard pack pea gravel for the next two miles. The route runs the length of Monument Valley Park and enters the historic Old North End neighborhood, winding along Wood Ave, Down Cascade Ave, through Colorado College and back into downtown. Racers will see family and friends again in Acacia Park as they head east on Platte Ave. Racers will circle by the Olympic Training Center, into Monument Valley Park, past the Velodrome, around Prospect Lake, and back on Platte Ave for a straight, fast finish into Acacia Park.

Course - 5K: The 5K will start 30 minutes following the start of the half marathon. The 5K route is the same as the half marathon route for the first 2.3 miles. Soon after entering Monument Valley park 5K runners will take a right off the trail and onto Monument Street. Monument Street will take runners through a short, uphill section onto Cascade Ave where they will merge with half marathon runners and end in Acacia Park. Even with a start time 30 minutes after the half marathon start, 5K runners should be back to Acacia Park in time to cheer on family and friends while they finish their half marathon.

Time Cut off: The official time cut off is 3 1/2 hours. Runners must reach mile 4 by 1 hour and 4 minutes and maintain a 16 minute mile pace after that. At mile 4 a race vehicle will trail behind runners at a 16 minute mile pace and roads will reopen to traffic behind the race vehicle. Racers that fall behind the race vehicle can either be picked up by the race vehicle or choose to unofficially finish the race, at their own risk, on the sidewalk.


Aid Stations: There will be eight aid stations with water, Gatorade, oranges, bananas, pretzels and Skittles. There will be a mix of flush bathrooms and porta potties available in each of the four parks along the route.

RegistrationAll registration except registration during packet pickup and race day will done online through Active.com A small online registration fee will be added. Registration on September 26th will be done during packet pickup, location to be determined (check the race website as the date approaches www.spreeracing.com/coshalf). Race day registration will begin at 6:00am at Acacia Park in Colorado Springs, no additional fee will be added to September 25-27 registration.

 

Prize Money: $5,000 in prize money will be split between top male and female finishers: 1st - $1,000, 2nd - $600, 3rd - $400, 4th - $200, 5th - $100 and $200 for first place masters.



T-shirts/Medals: All participants will receive a technical t-shirt and half marathon finishers will receive medals. NOTE: if you sign up after September 14th you may have to pick up your shirt from a local running store between October 7th-11th (location to be determined). We will mail shirts to participants outside of the Colorado Springs area upon request.

 

Course SurfaceThis is a fast loop course with a few small hills. Total elevation gain is 408 miles, for a map visit www.spreeracing.com. Mile 1 is on wide city streets. Mile 2 is on 15 foot wide cement pathway with one sharp turn. Mile 3 is on 15 foot wide hard-pack pea gravel. The remainder of the race is on is on city streets.

Timing: The Colorado Springs Half Marathon & 5K will be chip timed with race results posted soon after the race.
