13 Miles or 10K - Hit the trail and leave the road behind!
The Fountainhead Off-Road Half Marathon and 10K hit the EX2 race calendar for the first time in 2013 and it was an instant success! This fun and challenging course is a trail runners' dream and its location along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir has some of the most beautiful and remote-feeling terrain in Fairfax County, VA, only 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C.
The Fountainhead Off-Road Half Marathon and 10K has sold out each year since its inception and our trail running races often sell out weeks or months before race day. So, REGISTER EARLY to claim your spot on the starting line!
Course Info
Fountainhead Regional Park is situated along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir in Western Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. The 10K and half marathon race courses are beautiful and challenging consisting mostly of hiking trails (including the Bull Run Occoquan Trail), horse trails, and old dirt roads. This course is very demanding. Competitors will run over rocks and roots, through several streams, and up some quad burning hills. This race was a new addition in 2013 and it was an instant hit!
Both the half marathon and 10K are out and back courses that start with a short .5 mile road section at Fountainhead Regional Park before heading north along the Bull-Run Occoquan Trail (Blue Trail). The course extends to just past Wolf Run Shoals Rd. for the 10K and to Bull Run Marina for the Half Marathon. The northbound direction of the run features several fun single and double-track side trails and the southbound direction will be entirely on the Blue Trail, which parallels the Occoquan Reservoir. The location of the side trails and the flow of this race significantly limit two way traffic to just a few short sections. This brand new course design had never been used before its inaugural showing in 2013. Racers love the challenge, beauty, and fun of the course!
