Dear Friends:
If you look the word hero in the dictionary you would find it defined as “an illustrious warrior; one who shows great courage”. Walker Johns is the epitome of a hero and has left a mark on the world that will be everlasting. After being diagnosed with leukemia on July 29, 2010, this young man walked valiantly into battle and never wavered.
The courage Walker and his extraordinary family displayed inspired countless people. On April 16, 2011 the community hosted a benefit Walk/Run to help contribute financially as Walker’s battle ensued. A hero does not have to be undefeated only undeterred. As an avid football player, Walker was known for his love of the game, both on and off the field. On November 3, 2011, Walker Henry Johns was called to take the field in a place where there is no cancer, IVs, chemo, or hospitals.
Number 51’s legacy is far from over. In 2012, his loving family and friends founded the WALKER JOHN’S CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION in Walker’s memory. In the “Pay If Forward” spirit, Walker’s family and friends are hosting an annual event to assist others who are currently in the trenches of war against cancer.
We are extending you the opportunity help in honoring this young brave warrior and help others in the process by supporting the official: Walk/Run for Walker. This year’s event will be held on April 19th at the Farmington High School. All proceeds from this event will benefit local children and their families fighting cancer.
We want to extend our gratitude in advance, for being an integral part of this hero’s journey. Please return the bottom portion of the page with your donation.
· Your life changes:
· When sitting in doctor office and the teens begin discussing “hey what is your ANC?” versus the score of last night’s high school football game.
· When you don’t have any more squirt guns because your 13yr old says he can shoot a lot farther and more accurately with the 30ml syringes. (True that!)
· When you teen begins to complain about the band aids – and wanting to design their own.
· When your son says “hurry Mom they won’t be back for 30 seconds.” This is when you sneak and use the restroom in the room instead of walking down the hallway, outside of the unit, and into the waiting room to use the public one.
· When tongue depressors, tape and gauze become a form of art.
· When your little sister erases the nurse’s names off the dry erase board and begins Math lessons.
· When holding your child’s hand and they cannot hold it back.
· When you see a tear streaming down his cheek unable to wipe it away.
