Founded in 1846, the 1st Engineer Battalion is the oldest and most decorated in the Army. The battalion traces back to the for-mation of a company of Miners, Sappers, and Pontooniers at West Point, New York to fight in the Mexican War. Since then, the battalion has received 62 decorations and streamers and eight foreign awards. From the Vera Cruz campaign to three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan, the battalion has fought across the world in defense of freedom. The battalion lists among her famous alumni; Robert E. Lee, George McClellan, and P.G.T. Beauregard. Our purpose is to tell the story of our great battalion and to bring together former and current members of the "Always First Battalion." Each member of the battalion shares in its rich history and tradition regardless of what time frame or capacity he or she served. We have a special bond that few are ever able to experience. Membership is open to anyone who served in the First Engineer Battalion during any period.
The Veterans of the 1st Engineer Battalion are proud to welcome the greater running community to the second annual "Diehard Dash", a 10K/5K/1 MI fun run conducted in beautiful Tuttle Creek State Park, in the spirit of good competition.
