Description

Hunter's Heroes Team wishes to inspire our community to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community and also to embrace the loved ones that lost someone too soon. Hunter’s Heroes started as a Memorial Run for Deputy William Mast Jr. who died suddenly in the line of duty; his son, Hunter Mast, was born seventeen days later. We honor public safety officers and military personnel of their service to North Carolina and to the United States. Our intention is to remember and celebrate their commitment and to provide financial support to their families in times of need.

The fourth annual Hunter's Heroes memorial Run and Celebration will be May 21st at 8:30am. This year's recipiant will be in memory of Travis Jake Gryder, a young Blowing Rock firefighter who lost his life on May 11, 2015. Travis was a fun-loving son and brother that found passion in serving others through emergency services. He loved working with the Blowing Rock Fire Department and volunteering with the Watauga County Rescue Squad. Travis never thought twice about helping friends and fellow emergency workers when in need. In the furtherance of Travis' giving spirit, we will be starting a memorial scholarship and a relief fund that will provide assistance to firefighters, EMTs, First Responders and Rescue Personnel.

Course Info

The 5k and 10-miler races will both begin at 8:30 am on May 21st, 2016 at the Watauga County Sheriffs Department. The runners and walkers will head out of the Hodges Gap Road Parking Lot and up Oak Grove Road. They will then take a right onto 421 South and continue down the road until they reach the light at the Mellow Mushroom in downtown Boone, near the Courthouse. At the light, they will all take a right onto Water Street; at the end of the road take a left onto Rivers Street. Follow Rivers Street and enjoy the beautiful Appalachian State University Campus on both sides. As Rivers Street comes to an end, the participants will take a right onto 321 South. Stay straight on the highway and after three lights, the 5k runners and walkers will see their final destination at the Boone Police Department on the right. If the runners are running the 10 miler, they will run straight down 321 South. At Tanger Outlet Mall, turn Right into the parking lot. At the stop sign turn left and follow the left side of the road all the way back pass Polo Raulph Lauren. Cross over wooden bridge on the Left side and stay on the path that leads you to Chetola Lake Dr. Take a Left onto Chetola Lake Dr. Follow the road until one of our volunteers directs you to follow the path surrounding the pond.

Take stairs up to Chetola Lake Dr. and follow this road until it meets Main St.  After taking a right onto Main Street, and nearing the end of the race, the runners will turn left onto Park Avenue, where they will joyously cross the finish line at the Blowing Rock Police Department. The celebration and snacks will be awaiting the finishers arrival at the Memorial Park in the heart of downtown Blowing Rock, and near the finish line.
