This 5k was created in memory of Desiree Stockholm, a nurse practitioner at Strong Memorial Hospital, and a courageous young woman who fought a rare form of brain cancer for almost two years.
Although Desiree fought long and hard, she fought her battle the same way she lived her life. In her 31 years, she accomplished so much, including a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and a Master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner. Desiree was a well-loved nurse on high risk labor & deliv- ery at Strong for about 7 years before she became a nurse practitioner through the University of Rochester and worked with the stroke center. Desiree lived her life taking care of others and was loved by everyone. Her beautiful smile, kindness toward others, and her sense of humor made it easy to befriend her.
So, in memory of Desiree and her willingness to help others, we have created this 5k to carry on her memory and give back to others. For the first year of this race, the money raised will go to the Golisano Children’s Hospital for a plaque to be put up on the 7th floor (oncology) in memory of Desiree. Our family has committed to raise $35,000 for this memoire to be placed. Please help us raise money for a great hospital and wonderful young woman!
