NON-PROFIT 5K ORGANIZED BY UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENTS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SKIN CANCER RESEARCH AND HEART HEALTH PURPOSES.  FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENINGS BY UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DERMATOLOGISTS ON SITE!!!  LOCATED ALONG THE BEAUTIFUL CRANDON PARK BEACH SHORELINE (you will not be running on sand) WITH PARKING INCLUDED.  WIN MEDALS AND PRIZES WHILE ENJOYING FREE SNACKS AND WEARING YOUR COMPLIMENTARY SUNSMART T-SHIRT WITH PRIDE AT THIS ONE OF A KIND EVENT!!!

Cause #1: Skin Cancer Research at the University of Miami
Melanoma, a skin cancer, is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Every 67 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies from melanoma. Sun exposure is responsible for most melanomas and other skin cancers. Runners are at particular risk due to their increased sun exposure.  UM is on the cutting-edge of melanoma and skin cancer  research. A portion of the proceeds from this race will go towards skin cancer research at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.  This money will aide in research and development of new treatment options for patients with skin cancer.

Cause #2: PAD Program
Sudden cardiac arrest is the condition in which a person’s heart suddenly stops functioning properly. Over 465,000 people die each year due to sudden cardiac arrest. Once the heart fails to pump blood sufficiently, defibrillation is required within two to five minutes before the victim begins to develop irreversible brain damage.  Unfortunately, getting an AED to a victim before brain damage occurs is very difficult, which is why installing AEDs in public places around Miami can mean saving many lives. A portion of the proceeds from this race will go to the City of Miami’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Program, also known as Team for Life. The PAD program works to help make AEDs available around Miami “in order to improve survival rates of those who suffer a cardiac arrest

DIRECTIONS:
From North: Take I-95 South to Exit #1 - Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne ($1.75 toll). Drive 4.9 miles until you see the Crandon Park South Exit to your left.
From South: Take and remain on US 1 North. Turn right onto Rickenbacker Causeway ($1.75) and drive until the Crandon Park South Exit to your left.

PARKING:
Parking is free and will be available in the Crandon South Parking lot. Please carpool if possible.
