Description

_ The 2018 Lake Placid Classic Half Marathon & 10K:

The 48th annual Adirondack Health Lake Placid Classic Half Marathon and 10K will be held on October 06, 2018, starting in the Village of Lake Placid, on the famous Olympic Speed Skating oval. Both races run through the main village of Lake Placid, around Mirror Lake, then exit the village limits into the town of North Elba. Running by the historic Ski Jumping complex the participant entertain a few hills, then run out and back along the banks of the Au Sable River. The final push allows the participant to enjoy a true Adirondack hill, but it is a short 3/10th of a mile to a finish at the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds in the shadows of the Ski Jumping complex and several mountain ranges. The event continues to grow in both participation and popularity, revitalizing the event as a fall tradition in Lake Placid. The Lake Placid Classic maintains the objective of supporting our local youth, businesses and the health of our community. The majority of the proceeds are donated directly to local youth organizations and community efforts.

Visit, www.LakePlacidClassic.com for more information for this year’s event. Come out and cheer on the runners and walkers on Saturday, October 06, 2018. Both races get underway at 0800 in front of the Olympic Oval and finish at the North Elba Horse Show Grounds.

Event details and schedule

T-Shirts.

Because of the quality of this year’s participant shirts, we are very limited on the number of extra shirts and various sizes. FOLLOWING Saturday’s event bring your shirt to the information tent and trade-in may be available.  .

The Course.

Please be aware that the Half Marathon & 10K Race course is run on Village, Town and State highways. We do our best at closing certain roads and controlling vehicle traffic, however for much of the race, this is not possible and roadways are open to traffic. Runners are advised to stay left (facing oncoming traffic) in each direction along Route 73 and River Road sections of the course.

This year, due to construction, there are TWO points along the course where the Half Marathon and 10K participants will split off in different directions. These will be well marked and personnel directing, but please be aware of these areas.

THE START:

RUNNERS.

The Half Marathon & 10 K both begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Olympic Skating Oval on Main Street. The race course will officially close at 12:30 p.m. and any remaining runners may finish, however, their time will not be part of the finisher’s results.

WALKERS.

We have been asked by the local law enforcement to begin those Walkers who will exceed 16 minute miles (a 4 hour Half Marathon or 2 hour 10K) at 0830. Traffic control will be sparse, but present, so extra caution needs to be taken for until the official start at 0900. Walkers will be asked to begin their journey on the sidewalks.

RACE ETIQUETTE:

Race numbers must be pinned to the front of the shirt or shorts and visible at all times. Racing belts are acceptable.

If you are unable to finish either the Half or 10K please let the finish line staff know that you were unable to finish. If you do not go to the finish, please call (518) 637-7993 and let the Race Director know that you will not be finishing.

AWARDS:

10K Awards will be presented at the finish line area at 9:30 AM.

Half Marathon Awards will begin at 10:30 AM, if all award winners are off the course.

Parking

Because the race finishes in a different location than the start, runners are urged to park at the finish (Horse Show Grounds) and catch the shuttle to the start. Parking is FREE at the finish, and is not along the streets and in parking lots close to the start.  We have added another bus and the shuttle to/from the finish/start, see hours of operation below.  There also is a trolley that operates on a regular schedule which can be used, however this is not an advisable alternative to the shuttle.

Shuttle Schedule

6:30 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.

Once the last participant passes Horse show grounds Shuttles will begin again. Running until 1:00 p.m.

Shuttle pick-up will be at the corner of the front parking lot of the Horse Show Grounds, along Route 73 (Signage) with drop off in front of the Oval on Main Street. Post-race, pick-up will be the same as pick up and drop off will be in front of the Oval.

Aid Stations on the course

The Half Marathon will have 7 aid stations along the 13.1 mile & 10K course, with locations at 2.5, 4.5, 6, 7, 8.3, 8.8, 10 & 11 miles. All aid stations will offer water, and Gatorade, with the last 2 offering gels.

There is a Free Post Race Food and drink area, available at the finish area for athletes only.

Post-Race clothing and “stuff”

Because the FINISH of the race is at a different location than the START, a courtesy vehicle will be transporting all checked bags to the FINISH. You may retrieve your bag at the North Elba show grounds at the bag tent with proper identification. Do not leave valuables in your bag!  The Lake Placid/North Elba Half Marathon is not responsible for the security of any bags.

PACKET PICK-UP

Packet pick up is at the Lake Placid Beach house (Parkside Drive) on Friday, October 05, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, then on race day from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM at the Olympic Oval.
