Join us for a morning run through the woods at Pine Jog, one of the oldest nature centers in the country. The Wild Orchid 5K winds along packed dirt trails through 132 acres of pine flatwood forest and upland hammock, under tree canopies, and past rare, and endangered native orchids, gopher tortoises, owls, and woodpeckers. The course has much to offer for every runner, from serious runners to families with little ones and everyone in between. All race proceeds benefit the OrKids programming at FAU Pine Jog. This student outreach portion of our Million Orchid Program is offered at no cost to the schools and introduces middle school-aged students to a plant propagation lab, and allows them to propagate their own native orchids in their regular classrooms while learning about botany, ecosystem services and restoration. All of the orchids grown in the OrKids program will remain on the school campuses, as a reminder of the project and the importance of environmental stewardship.
The race will begin and end in the parking lot in front of the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center. The first half of the course will follow the outer perimeter of the forest, along a wide, packed sand route. The second half of the course will circle through the heart of the forest, under canopied trees and past endangered orchid habitat.
