Although we meet at the Colma BART station to start, every participant will have a short bus ride to their actual start location, and an event official on the bus will start you on the clock once everybody is safely off the bus. Everybody finishes at the final destination of Cafe Pacifica.
The 1:15000 custom map for this event is based on data from OpenStreetMap, Google, and it has 50 foot elevation contours, so you know roughly how much elevation gain there will be along your route. Also, the map has a few updates to emphasize where you can and can not pass.
For each course, you find the checkpoints on your map in any order you would like on the way to the finish. 30k participants find all 26 checkpoints. For the 20k course, there are 22 checkpoints. And 12k participants will visit 13 checkpoints. At each checkpoint, you answer a simple multiple choice question with a pen or pencil.
The courses are designed to be pedestrian friendly, although sometimes the sidewalks are only on one side of a road rather than both. Participants will cross some busy or speedy streets such as El Camino Real and Skyline Boulevard, caution is advised.
