JoAnn was a precious friend of our Midland family. She also brought to our family her loving husband Marvin and her two beautiful children McKayla and Avery. She started teaching at MES in 1997 and we were blessed to have her for the sixteen years that followed. During her time at MES she taught first grade, third grade, and served as a reading interventionist. JoAnn was diagnosed with breast cancer in fall of 2008. After her diagnosis she had a double mastectomy that was followed with chemotherapy and radiation. She then went into remission in late 2009. Life resumed a normally and things seemed to be going well until she was told that the cancer was back in the area between her ribs. This caused her much pain on a daily basis and yet she continued to come to school daily because she knew that “her babies” needed her. Not only was she an inspirational teacher but she also saw that the needs of all children that she worked with were met and often times many of their wants as well. She had such a genuine, giving heart that few people possess. She again started radiation to treat her bones and continued to fight with such determination and always remaining positive. She was a true blessing to everyone that she graced with her presence. In the spring of 2013 the pain increased and at that time was told that the disease was progressing and her bones were being greatly affected by this, especially her hips and back. In June 2013 she was told that it was now in her spinal fluid and eventually led to her brain. This courageous woman lost her battle on earth on August 28, 2013 but because of her strong faith entered a healed heavenly body. It is because of the friend that she was to us that we continue to keep her memory and will to fight alive in our community by sponsoring the 5K Fun Run. She proudly supported Breast Cancer Awareness and the importance of mammography and in her memory we would like to continue to support this cause while promoting awareness and routine screening to those in our area. As our family remembers JoAnn, we will continue to spread the word to help others in the fight against cancer just as our compassionate and dear friend JoAnn would do.
