Description

   Who is Ava?

Ava is 5 years old, lives in Mt. Airy, MD and was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth. She attends Winfield Elementary, loves the color pink, Frozen, and her little brother, Michael. Ava is as typical as a preschooler gets. The only thing that makes her “different” is an additional chromosome. As Ava grows, she continues to break barriers and stereotypes set by society. She captivates people with her contagious smile and huge personality causing those who meet her to fall in love.

What is Ava’s 5K for Down Syndrome?

Ava’s 5K for Down Syndrome, hosted by Ava's T21 Foundation, Inc., will foster inclusion through awareness of individuals with Down syndrome. This event will benefit families through Family Resource, Information & Education Network for Down Syndrome (F.R.I.E.N.D.S.), a Down syndrome advocacy group based in Frederick, MD, and the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), a national Down syndrome advocacy group based out of New York, NY.

For more information on F.R.I.E.N.D.S please visit www.friendsoffredco.org

 Mission

We envision a community of value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome, so they have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities.

 What is Down Syndrome?

In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is stored in genes.  Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes.  Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21, making Down syndrome the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. 1 in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome.

Facts

The incidence of births of children with Down syndrome increases with the age of the mother. As a result of higher fertility rates in younger women, 80% of children with Down syndrome are born to women under 35 years of age.

People with Down syndrome attend school, work, participate in decisions that affect them, and contribute to society in many wonderful ways.

All people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate and is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses.

Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care, and positive support from family, friends and the community enable people with Down syndrome to develop their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.

Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels.

There are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the United States.
