The community of Central Lake, Michigan, will hold the 9th annual Ryan Shay Mid Summer Night Run in conjunction with their 4th of July celebration. Ryan grew up in Central Lake and was an 11 times state champion in track and cross-country, 10 times AllAmerican at the University of Notre Dame, 10,000 meter NCAA champion, 5 times USA National Champion, and represented the United States in competition throughout the world. On November 3, 2007, Ryan passed away from sudden heart failure while competing in the US Olympic Marathon Trials. In memory of Ryan, three races are offered. Choose from the 5k run/walk, 10k run, or the Fudgee’s Ice Cream 1Mile Fun Run. The 5k and 10k courses will cover roads and trails where Ryan often trained while living in Central Lake. All events take place in the evening. Proceeds support the Ryan Shay Memorial Scholarships.
