Event details and schedule

Course Description:

Hemlock Overlook is situated along the banks of historic Bull Run in Western Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. The 10K and half marathon race courses are beautiful and challenging consisting mostly of hiking trails (including the Bull Run Occoquan Trail), horse trails, and seldom used riverside single-track. These courses are very demanding. Competitors will run over rocks and roots, through several streams, and up some quad burning hills.

Both the half marathon and 10K are out and back courses that start with a short .4 mile road and field section at Hemlock Overlook before heading north along the Bull-Run Occoquan Trail (Blue Trail). Both courses will extend beyond the railroad bridge and then onto a 1.6 mile side loop which will double back onto the Blue Trail. At this point the 10K runners will head back south along the Blue Trail and take several side trails to finish at Hemlock Overlook. After connecting back to the Blue Trail after completing the 1.6 mile side loop, the Half Marathon racers will continue heading north along the Blue Trail for just over 2 miles until the Blue Trail intersects with the River Trail. The Half Marathon racers will head south along the River Trail until intersecting the Blue Trail near the railroad bridge. From this point, the Half Marathon racers will head back south along the Blue Trail and take several side trails to finish at Hemlock Overlook. The location of the side trails and the flow of this race significantly limit two way traffic to just a few short sections.

This brand new course design had never been used before and we are excited to unveil it in 2016. Racers will love the challenge, beauty, and fun of the course!
