- “If you can hear my voice, you can break…” Those words, spoken by beloved race announcer Kurt Steiner (1921−1993), encouraged countless race finishers to run their hearts out. Steiner was a founding member of NYRR and a competitive runner and race walker.
Born in Austria, Steiner was a member of the French Foreign Legion who escaped from enemy captors. Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford was one of his soldiers in the U.S. Army. Steiner worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help stage the first five-borough New York City Marathon and assisted NYRR with race scoring, race applications, and media activities.
Please note: NYRR cross country races do not count toward the 9+1 program.
