For over 20 years, the Plum Running Mustangs have provided young people in the Plum School District with an avenue for fitness and fellowship based on the ideals of Respect for other, hard work, and family. In 2007, the Running Mustang family reached out to support others who were running a race, not for a trophy, but a race for their lives. Thus the Stampede in the Park 5K race was born. We raise money for leukemia/lymphoma research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI).
The development of Stampede in the Park during the last nine years has been a humbling experience. The communities in this area have rallied around a truly worthwhile cause. The main proceeds of our race come from the generous donations of our corporate and individual sponsors. Because of our sponsors, we have been able to donate over $210,000 within a nine-year period to UPCI Hillman Center. Having been personally involved with Hillman Center, I have witnessed first hand the amazing work done at this center. Through their effort in research, the medical community is on the verge of finding cures for certain cancers.
This year we will be accepting canned goods on race day, which will be donated to the Plum food pantry.
