About This Activity
On August the 13th, we are holding our 2nd annual SW VA 811 Run to help raise awareness of the risk you take every time you dig (excavate) without calling 811 first. 811 is the national Call Before You Dig number, created to help protect individuals from hitting underground utility lines while digging. Whether you are a homeowner or a professional excavator, calling 811 before you dig will get your underground utility lines marked at no cost. We want everyone in Virginia to take CARE - Call 811 before digging, Allow required time, Respect the markings, Excavate carefully. By holding the first Annual SWVA 811 Run, Virginia is joining other states like Minnesota, North Carolina, Mississippi and Kansas in the national push to spread the safety message of 811.
Please join us at the Christiansburg Recreation Center (1600 N Franklin St, Christiansburg) for either an 8 mile run or a 5K run/walk. Both courses will provide participants with beautiful scenery. There will be music and we will have the grill fired up to feed all the tired and hungry participants. There will be give-a-ways and educational material available to help encourage everyone to Call 811 Before Digging.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department because the Fire Department is the first responder if anyone hits a gas line while digging. Members of the department will be on hand to help spread the safety message.

5K Run/Walk
Individual – The run will begin in the back of the Recreation Center and follow the Huckleberry Trail to the New River Valley Mall, where it will loop the back parking lot and return. This will be a timed event for those who enjoy racing the clock, but all are welcome to participate at the level that you feel comfortable with. Jogging strollers are welcome at this run.
*AWARDS*
The top 3 Male and Female in each of the following age groups will receive medals:
11 & under, 12-15, 16-19, 20-25, 26-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61+
*REGISTRATION*
Registration forms will be available at the Christiansburg Rec Center, Run About Sports and the Atmos energy office. On line registration is available at www.active.com (small fee charged). Registration forms can be dropped off or mailed to the Atmos energy office at 1013 West Main St, Radford, Va 24141. Please make all checks out to Atmos energy.
$25 if received or postmarked by August 10th.
$30 if registering on race day.
8 Mile Run
This timed run is for those runners looking for an opportunity to push themselves or help prepare for even bigger runs, such as a half marathon and a perfect way to see where they are in their training. The run will begin in the back of the Recreation Center at 7:30am (with the 5K starting 5-10min later) and follow the Huckleberry Trail to Hightop Rd in Montgomery County and return. This is a challenging but beautiful scenic run with rolling hills, creeks and historic references along the route.

Food Registration
Whether you are there to support someone who is running or walking, to learn more about 811 or to support the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Dept, food will be available for a small fee. All run/walk participants have free access to all food and drinks. There will be many snacks available and grilled hamburgers and hotdogs available after 9am. Adults- $5.00, Children 12 and younger are free. All proceeds will be donated to the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department.
Parking
The event will begin and end at the Christiansburg Recreation Center (1600 N Franklin St, Christiansburg). Parking will be in front of the center while all event activities will take place in the back parking lot of the center.
Packet Pick-up
Early packet pick-up can be done on Friday, August 12th at the Atmos Energy office located at 1013 W Main St in Radford from 8am – 7pm. Please bring valid ID for pick-up
Run Day packet pick-up will begin at 6:30am at the registration tent. Please bring a valid ID for pick-up.
