Description

Don't Relay Race, Team Race...MUTT Style!

Welcome to the only team race series of it's kind! The MUTT series team race format allows for different distance runners to race together, while assuring each runner contributes to the success of the team.

The Mighty MUTT Race

Each team will consist on a 25, 50, 75, and 100 mile runner. At the start of the race, each team will start out running together and MUST stay together until they reach the 12.5 mile mark, then the 25 mile runner will turn around and return to the start/finish line completing the 25 mile run, while the remaining three runners continue on. At the 25 mile mark, the 50 mile runner will turn around and head back to the start/finish line, with the remaining two continuing on. At mile 37.5, the 75 mile runner will return and so on. Once all 4 runners return to the finish line completing their individual distances, all four times are tabulated for the total team time.

The MUTT Team Trail Race Series

MUTT team trail races are NOT relay races but rather team trail races that require 4 team members to start and stay together at the beginning of the race, and one by one turn around at the halfway point of each individual distance. The format allows for different distance runners to race together, and also assures each runner contributes to the success of the team. Pace strategy is critical in assuring the best team time. The Mighty MUTT is the longest of the 3 MUTT trail races scheduled for 2016.

Event details and schedule

Race Course

The Mighty MUTT starts in Petoskey MI and follows the North Country trail. The 100 mile runner will travel the entire out and back course from Petoskey to the Mighty Mackinaw Bridge and back to Petoskey completing the total 100 mile course. The turnaround point for the 100 mile runner under the Mackinaw Bridge at night should be breathtaking! There will be a total of 4 “on-course” aid stations at each turn around point. Drop bag service at each turnaround will be available.

Awards

All teams are automatically entered in the “Best in Show” (top team award) and “Best in Breed” (Top individual time) open division. This means that teams and individual times will not handicapped for the top spot in the race. Once the top team and individual distance awards are given, all remaining teams and individuals will be handicapped based on the following to determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in both team and individual categories: Women plus age handicap - 10% Age 10 and under - 10% Age 11 to 15 - 5% Age 16 to 39 - 0% Age 40 to 49 (for each year over 39) - 1% Age 50 to 64 (for each year over 49) - 10% + 1.5% per yr

Team Information

Each Mighty MUTT team will have a core group of 4 runners plus a race coordinator (not running). The team must consist of 1 of the following:

Core Team:

  1. Team coordinator: Non-runner
    • Is responsible for keeping in contact with all team members
    • Will be the main contact for the race director
  2. 25 mile runner
  3. 50 mile runner
  4. 75 mile runner
  5. 100 mile runner

Optional Team pacers (it is highly recommended that teams also includes the following)

Because of the remote out and back course that will be run at night, it is recommended that pacers are used during the return portion of the 100 mile and 75 mile runs.

  1. Pacers: Each 100 and 75 mile runner may run with 1 pacer each on the course after each runner reaches the turnaround at either mile 50 and 37.5 mile points respectively. It is the team’s responsibility to position the pacers during the race. Pacers can be changed out at each aid station on the way back to the finish line, meaning the pacers only have to cover the 12.5 miles between each aid station. Each pacer must check in at the aid stations before pacing the team runner.
    • 100 mile pacer (running 50 miles back to finish)
    • 75 mile pacer (running 37.5 miles back to finish)
