This event was first organized in 1975 to honor the memory of eight Philadelphia Firefighters who lost their lives battling the Gulf Oil Refinery fire on August 17, 1975. The Memorial Run has continued annually in order to remember all other Philadelphia Firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

This year we are also honoring the 40th Anniversary of the Barson’s Fire (May 16, 1976) - FF David Stewart, FF Bernard McSloy, FF Aloysius Welsh, and FF Richard Iannacone, the 30th Anniversary of FF Ed Friel (May 3, 1986) and FF Harry Henz (May 23, 1986), and the 25th Anniversary of the One Meridian Fire (February 24, 1991) - CPT David P. Holcombe, FF Phyllis McAllister, and FF James Chapell, and of FF Stephen Yale (December 16, 1991). The proceeds of this year's event will benefit the burn centers at Delaware Valley at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Temple University Hospital, and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children
