On this one mile course, kids ages 4-15 will run from start to finish while trying to avoid being “bitten” (stickered) by the zombies that roam the course. Parents and older siblings ages 16 and up, you are the zombies! So, again…Kids are the runners (and get a tshirt and medal) and adults are the zombies (and get great photo ops)!
Any parent can run with his/her child as long as that parent is registered as a bodyguard. No adult will be allowed on course without a race bib or volunteer bracelet. This is for your child’s security. So, while we like for our zombies to stay on the course for all age waves, if your child wants you to stay by his/her side to be a this is fine. You don’t HAVE to dress like a zombie, but you will find that if you do, it helps the child to appreciate that all of the other zombies are probably someone elses mom or dad in make up too!
All zombies will provide their own costume and make up. As we get closer to the race day, look for emails with tips on how to best zombify yourself. We’ll have tips on makeup, shuffling along slowly, moaning and groaning, and general zombie etiquette!
We highly recommend that race packets be picked up in advance of the event. Race packet pick up will take place on the FRIDAY prior to the event. Location TBD.
Plan to arrive no later than 7am. (if you know someone that doesn’t have their packet advise them to arrive by 6:45am)
If you have your packet then you can proceed directly to the area in front of DSW in the Dollar Tree /Target parking lot. Listen carefully for announcements. Zombies will be placed prior to the 8am start time and should plan to stay on the course for all waves, unless it’s necessary to leave the course to stay with or pick up a child at the finish corral. Your child will be placed in a secure starting corral and will finish in a safe corral , so you won’t have to worry about being on the course. However, if you are the only adult with your child, please leave the course after he/she runs so they don’t have to wait around in the corral. (again, we prefer that you are able to stay on the course for all waves) See below for more on this.
Pin kids/runner bibs to their BACK. For added peace of mind, write your phone number on your child’s bib. Zombie bibs go on the front. You will receive stickers in your race bag. Bring your stickers with you. This is how you “bite” kids. We will give further instructions at the event prior to placing you on the course.
Each runner must wear a wristband that designates his/her wave. Parents must show a matching wristband to retrieve children from kids corral . This is not negotiable and is for your child’s safety.
Listen carefully to all stage announcements once you arrive. The kids will be called when their wave is about to start.
Yes, you can do that at packet pick up. We prefer kids run in their age wave but know that some siblings and friends do not want to be separated, so just ask at packet pick up and they will provide the appropriate colored bracelet for your child. I’M A ZOMBIE AND DON’T HAVE ANYONE TO STAY WITH MY CHILD WHEN I AM ON THE COURSE, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Of course we prefer zombies stay on the course for all waves, but if you can’t, simply wait for your child’s wave to be called then enter the course backwards. Stay toward the end of the course so you can retrieve your runner from the finish corral as soon as possible. Please do NOT remove any child from the course without going through the finish corral.
NO TOUCHING RUNNERS. STICKERS CAN BE PLACED LIGHTLY ON CHILDREN’S RACE BIB.
WAVES WILL BE RELEASED IN ORDER OF OLDEST TO YOUNGEST. AS THE RUNNERS GET YOUNGER, PLEASE ACT LESS AND LESS SCARY. IF A CHILD IS CLEARLY FRIGHTENED OR CRYING, PLEASE SMILE AND SAY SOMETHING REASSURING…”ITS JUST A COSTUME, I’M SO AND SO’S DAD”
DO NOT TAKE ANY CHILD OFF OF THE COURSE, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. IF A CHILD IS INJURED STAY WITH HIM/HER UNTIL AN EMT OR FIRST AID VEHICLE COMES BY. WE HAVE FIRST AID STATIONS AT THE HALF WAY POINT AND THE FINISH CORRAL, TWO TEAMS OF EMTS ON BICYCLES ROAMING THE COURSE, AND A “ZOMBIE OUTBREAK RESPONSE VEHICLE” TO PICK UP SCARED KIDDOS.
ZOMBIES DON’T REALLY CHASE THE KIDS. JUST TAKE A FEW STEPS TOWARD THEM…FASTER FOR THE OLDER KIDS….THEN RETURN TO YOUR POSITION.
WHILE ON THE COURSE YOU ARE ALSO SECURITY. BE SURE THE KIDS ARE STAYING ON COURSE!
There is plenty of free parking at the St. Johns Town Center!
Listen carefully to all stage announcements once you arrive. The kids will be called when their wave is about to start.
