On January 3, 2008, former HCC student Heather Hurd was traveling to meet her wedding planner at Disney World in Florida when she was killed by a distracted tractor trailer driver who was text messaging. Tragically, 40,000 of our families and friends are killed every year on our nation's highways. Over 500 people lose their lives each year in Maryland alone. It is our greatest hope that the Heather Hurd 5K Walk/Run will not only honor those lost on our highways, but also help reduce these needless fatalities by increasing public awareness with the creation of Remembrance Book Scholarships at Harford Community College. Please join us in helping save lives by participating in the Annual Heather Hurd 5K Run and Trick or Treat Kids Walk.

The walk/run was established by the Hurd Family and Harford Community College in 2009 to raise funds for the Harford Community College Remembrance Book Scholarship Fund and to raise awareness of traffic accidents, their consequences and what can be done to prevent them.
Over the seven years the race has been held, more than $135,000 has been raised for Remembrance Book Scholarships.
Entry Fees:
5k
$25 for general public by 12 PM on 10/27, $30 after 10/27 including race day
$15 for HCC students and employees (with valid ID) by 12 PM on 10/27, $30 after 10/27
$15 for participants 18 & under with a registered runner or walker by 12 PM on 10/27, $30 after 10/27
Children under 10 are free!
The trick or treat kids area is free for children 10 years of age and younger!
The event will be held rain or shine, and entry fees are non-refundable.

Course Information:
The 5k course will cover the grounds of Harford Community College on paved surfaces. Pets, roller skates, skateboards, and other wheeled devices are not allowed on the course for the 5k - strollers must start at the back of the field.
Awards:

The top male and female in the following age groups will receive an award: 14 and under, 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+
Amenities:
T-shirts to all participants (sizes and availability not guaranteed for those registering after October 12). Water will be available at the halfway point of the 5k course, and course marshals will direct racers at major turns. Post-race refreshments will also be available. After the race, participants have the opportunity to interact with various law enforcement and advocacy groups through activities.
Packet Pick Up:
Packets will be available for pick up on Friday, October 28th from 4-8 PM in the Susquehanna Center lobby. Packets will also be available on race day from 8 AM - 8:45 AM in the Susquehanna Center.
