Please join DAI in supporting the Linda Norgrove Foundation by participating in the 2016 Linda Norgrove 5k Run/Walk. Started in 2010, the Linda Norgrove Foundation seeks to continue the work of the late Linda Norgrove, a DAI employee who devoted herself to ensuring that the people of Afghanistan can achieve prosperity and stability as their country is rebuilt. The Foundation provides grants focused primarily on Afghan women and children’s education, healthcare, and childcare.

This year, help us raise money for Ascend, a not-for-profit organization that fosters leadership and teamwork through athletic achievement. A team of Afghan women will complete an intensive training program promoting unity as they acquire advanced mountaineering skills. When ready, they will scale one of Afghanistan’s highest peaks. Ascend uses mountain climbing to cultivate unity and a sense of shared achievement among Afghan women of different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It fosters a camaraderie rarely experienced in a culture where women have little opportunity to build relations with one another outside of their families or beyond their own communities. Such a straightforward, universally-understood achievement as reaching a mountain peak pushes the bounds of belief in what Afghan women are capable of doing and sets an example for young people in Afghanistan and beyond.
