November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month and for the past 5 years we have kicked it off with a 5k walk/run to raise awareness and support for Alzheimer’s in our community. The 2016 “Turkey Trot for a Cure” is planned for Saturday November 5th at the Morehead Conference Center.
Last year’s event was a great success with more than 200 walkers/runners and over $6000.00 in donations for our Foundation’s Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care Fund. Our race is for everyone from the beginner to the most advanced, we welcome all “Trotters” to join us for a fun filled morning of food, fun, & fellowship as we work towards a goal of eliminating Alzheimer’s disease.
The race course will be in beautiful downtown Morehead. The morning will include informational sessions on Alzheimer’s & Dementia, a free health fair, a kids “fun” room, chicken noodle soup & hot chocolate after the race and our Mayor will be providing the entertainment.
While we have a fun morning planned, more importantly, we need to be aware of the extent Alzheimer’s disease has on America and continue to work together to find a cure. The annual “Alzheimer’s Association Facts & Figures” for 2015 are astounding. Over 5 million people in the US have Alzheimer’s disease; including 69,000 Kentuckians. The disease affects 1 in 8 older adults and it is the 6th leading cause of death in the US today for which there is no cure. 50% of those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease never receive the diagnosis. On another note there are as many as 16 million unpaid caregivers! Many reside in Morehead & Rowan County.
We look forward to seeing you!
