Description

2,500 Years of Heroic Running...The modern Athens Marathon commemorates the run of the soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield at the site of the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C., bringing news of a Greek victory over the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides delivered the momentous message "Niki!" ("victory"), then collapsed and died, thereby setting a precedent for dramatic conclusions to the marathon.

When the modern Olympic games were inaugurated in 1896 in Greece, the legend of Pheidippides was revived by a 24.85 mile (40,000 meters) run from Marathon Bridge to Olympic stadium in Athens. Traditionally the final event in the Olympics, the first organized marathon on April 10, 1896 was especially important to all Greeks. Greece was hosting those first modern Olympic Games. The Greeks had yet to win a medal, and had one final chance to bring glory to their nation. Twenty-five runners assembled on Marathon Bridge. The starter mumbled a few words and fired the gun, and the race was on. "The excitement of the crowd waiting at the finish line at the newly constructed replica of Athens' ancient stadium was beyond description" writes the Greek historian Quercetani. Spiridon Louis, a Greek postal worker from the village of Marusi and veteran of several long military marches, crossed the finish line a full seven minutes ahead of the pack. His time was 2 hours, 58 minutes, 50 seconds for the 40 kilometer distance. When it was all over nine runners finished, 8 of them Greeks. The host nation was ecstatic, and the marathon was born.

Athens Marathon, 10k & 5K - date, time, route

The Athens Marathon is like no other on Earth. According to legend, it covers the same ground that the Athenian messenger Phiedippides ran when he brought news of victory from the battlefield of Marathon 2,500 years ago. When you run the Athens Marathon, you run in the very footsteps of the ancient gods and heros that gave birth to western civilization. The finish line is in Athens' magnificent Olympic Stadium, the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. Those who run the Athens Marathon say it is an experience they'll never forget.

The Athens Marathon is recognized as the original marathon course and it was the same course used in the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.

Apostolos Greek Tours
offers you the best way to experience the Athens Marathon. Paul Samaras, who personally conducts the Athens Marathon Tour each year, is a Greek native now living in Denver. He works closely S.E.G.A.S.(hellenic amateur athletic association) and others in Greece to smooth out the hassles so you can concentrate on what matters---running your best and experiencing Greece. Check out what is included in the Apostolos Marathon Tour packages. Check out what some of previous tour members had to say about the Athens Marathon and Apostolos Greek Tours.

The Athens Marathon 26.2 miles is run entirely on asphalt. The first twelve kilometers are level. The middle nineteen kilometers are gentle long hills. The final eleven kilometers are downhill. The finish line is in Athens' magnificent Olympic Stadium.

I am sad that we cannot join you this year for the tour.  You are a friend and I respect you greatly.  As you know, my contract with Disney forces me to be in Florida during the key time when the participants would need my personal clinics. Chris Twiggs, my national program director, will be joining you in Athens this year.

Chris is very familiar with my training program, run-walk-run strategies, and virtually anything else about marathoning and can answer any questions about the course. Chris is a Boston Qualifier, and knows my system thoroughly.

Though I will not be able to join you and the runners in Athens this year for the Marathon, please advise your runners that their coach for this year's training season will still be me, Olympian Jeff Galloway. I have coached thousands of runners to successful finishes in the Athens Classic Marathon for the past 17 years. My run-walk-run method has helped hundreds of thousands stay injury free. When a runner signs up through Apostolos Greek Tours, they will receive my training schedule which will provide the training needed for the race on November 11. I will also be available to them via email for any clarifications or training questions.

Sincerely,
Jeff Galloway

Here is Jeff's own description of what the Athens Marathon means to him, and why it's a running experience you'll never forget:

Welcome to the very best running tour of Athens!

After working with Paul Samaras and his great staff for 18 years, and comparing notes with those who've enrolled in other tours, I don't believe there is a better way to experience Greece as a fitness experience.  The helpful and friendly guides, smooth logistics, wonderful meals, running on the paths of ancient athletes--it's priceless.  Last year, on a hilltop near our hotel area just off a wonderful running trail, Barbara and I found an inscription in the bedrock that appears to be of ancient origin.  We will explain how running was a significant thread in the original fabric of western civilization.  You have a lot to look forward to.

Running Comments Jeff Galloway: Almost any runner can finish strong in Athens.

Having worked with dozens of beginning runners who have "conquered" the Athens Marathon course, I can say that with the right pacing and strategy, the Athens Marathon will not seem difficult at all. Since 1995, I have helped runners train for and actually run this historic course. Since there are many "once in a lifetime" experiences on this trip, I don't recommend going for a personal record--but several of our past participants have done this. You'll share thoughts with fellow runners from all over the world, as you cover the same ground trod by Phidippides in 490 BC--the route used in the very first marathon race, in the very first modern Olympic Games. This is truly a heritage experience for runners--one that you will remember for the rest of your life.
