Description

As we continue to keep juvenile incarceration in an adult system at the forefront, we are hosting our annual 5K Run/Walk.  Initiated in 2009, this race seeks to bring awareness to the high rate of juvenile transfer in Louisiana.  A report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center in early 2016 examined the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s approach to the prosecution of juveniles and the process of juvenile transfer. The report, “More Harm Than Good”, details how the DA’s Office is referring 80% of children accused of certain statutorily specified crimes to adult criminal court, which is more than twice that of the parish with the second highest rate. The report also states that “the use of default transfer is unfair and ineffective – it fails to protect public safety, conserve public dollars, or respond appropriately to juvenile crime.”

At Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children (FFLIC), we take great pride in leading the fight for juvenile justice reform for the past 15 years.  We are re-committing our organization to holding elected officials accountable and changing legislation to systematically eliminate the re-victimization of our children by putting them in an adult criminal system.  It is our belief that the confinement of children with adults in jails and prisons is indefensible, cruel and unusual, and should be banned.

On October 16, 2016, FFLIC, in conjunction with the Campaign for Youth Justice, will hold its 7th Annual 5K Run/Walk in conjunction with the Youth Justice Awareness Month (YJAM).  Our partner, The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ), is a national campaign dedicated to ending the practice of trying, sentencing, and incarcerating children under the age of 18 in the adult criminal justice system where they are harmed or more likely to commit suicide.  The race will begin at 8am at Audubon Park Shelter No. 10. We are hoping you will support our children and families by registering and attending our event!
