Description

The 8th Annual Alex's Walk N Roll Toward Wellness takes place in beautiful Haymarket, VA at Battlefield High School. It starts and ends on the Battlefield track but weaves its way around the school property and along route 15 to and from Long Park. The event also includes family fun activities such as moon bounces, face painting, music, games, special guest Mini Tyrell from Mini's Mission, and much more!

The event started out as a way for the Green family to give back to organizations helping families like theirs impacted by Childhood Cancer but has since grown tremendously over the years. Alex Green was a local Haymarket resident who battled cancer from the time he was 5 years old.  Over the years he was in treatment, Alex endured over 17 surgeries, 60 radiation treatments, immunotherapy and other clinical trials, 1 surgery which left him partially paralyzed from the waist down and another which left him partially paralyzed in his right hand.  Throughout everything Alex remained a determined and strong child.  He loved football and athletics, whenever he could make games and practices between treatments he played on the DC Sled Sharks sled hockey team and the Fairfax Falcons Wheelchair Basketball team.  He excelled as an athlete and inspired all who knew him.  Alex passed away at the age of 12, on June 5th of this year with his mom and dad by his side.

Alex is just 1 of the many children and families in our nation whose lives are forever changed by Childhood Cancer.  46 children every day are diagnosed with a form of the disease and every day 7 children in our nation die from Childhood Cancer.  Childhood Cancer is the #1 cause of death for children in our country, yet ALL childhood cancers combined only receive 4% of the total cancer research budget.  There is a big campaign trying to get more funding for Childhood Cancer Research and Alex’s Army is dedicated to helping fund research through the Children’s Oncology Group which treats over 90% of children battling cancer.  Alex's Army is a 501c3 nonprofit organization - all donations are tax deductible.  Visit their website for more information at www.alexsarmyccf.org.
