Cade Moureau, son of Paul and Katie, was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome at just 2 days old. The difficulties associated with PWS are numerous and vary from individual to individual. These challenges include low muscle tone, developmental delays, behavioral issues, and much more. However, the hardest truth of PWS is that almost all who are afflicted will lose their ability to feel full very early in life. PWS is the most common known cause of life threatening obesity in children. Without a treatment, Cade will spend his entire life hungry, yet because of a decreased metabolism, he will need to be on a very strict diet and caloric intake each day (approximately 800 – 1000 calories per day). Cade is fortunate to be a patient of the nation’s leading PWS expert, Dr. Jennifer Miller at the University of Florida-Health. Dr. Miller has committed her life to research treatments for the insatiated hunger that those with PWS experience. This year she is closer than ever. Dr. Miller completed Phase 1 of her Oxytocin trial and the results were astounding! The children in the study reported having decreased anxiety, increased social skills and most importantly, a decrease in hunger. Our community has been waiting years for a drug like this. The results were so impressive that Phase 2 was immediately approved! In order for these kids to get access to this life changing treatment, our PWS community must fund Phase 2. There is $400,000 needed to meet our 2-million-dollar goal. Dr. Miller works continuously for our children. It is now our turn to help her. 4 Miles for Cade is holding a 4 Mile Walk/Run on the Glacier Drumlin Trail starting at Huston Park on Sunday, May 28, 2017, from 2:00 -6:00p.m. There will be a raffle, truck display, a light snack, and lots of fun!
