Description

The Memphis Heroes race is a unique 6K run/walk presented by The Oaks at La Paloma, a member of Foundations Recovery Network. Foundations Recovery Network’s mission is to be the leader in evidence-based, integrated treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders through clinical services, education and research.

Heroes in Recovery has a simple mission: to eliminate the social stigma that keeps individuals with addiction and mental health issues from seeking help, to share stories of recovery for the purpose of encouragement and inspiration, and to create an engaged sober community that empowers people to get involved, give back, and live healthy, active lives. It takes a heroic effort to live clean and sober each day, and a Heroes 6K celebrates that effort. The sixth kilometer separates a Heroes race from a typical 5K to symbolize the extra effort it takes to sustain recovery. The six kilometers also represent the six letters in the word HEROES.

Course Info

Race Course

The flat, fast course is a combination of limestone and paved path through the Old Forest State Natural Area on the east side of the park. With an ecosystem dating back more than 10,000 years, the arboretum is a rare peek into what the city would have looked like before humans arrived and brought development along with them.  Some trees in the forest are hundreds of years old, and the extremely diverse plant community supports a wide range of wildlife. Enjoy a little slice of nature in the midst of city life!

Note: All kilometers, the start and finish are marked with white paint and a 1 1⁄4” washer nailed to the asphalt. While 3K & 4K are located on the limestone trail, they are marked with washers and white paint on the streets with an arrow pointing to their respective locations on the trail.

Start – Located approx. 500’ south of the pavilion, the washer is in line with the south line of the fire station building on East Parkway.

1K – Located approx. 500’ east of the Zoo service road, the washer is approx. 150’west of a round wide section in the asphalt (like an old cul-d-sac maybe??)
2K – Located on Old Forest Lane the washer is in line with the entrance to the dog park.
3K – Located on the limestone trail and in line with the east edge of the triangle on Golf Dr.
4K – Located on the limestone trail near Old Forest Lane, the washer is approx. 500’ east of the gate.
5K – Located on Golf Dr. the washer is in line with the front of the golf tee box on the south side.
Finish – Located on North Old Forest Extd, the washer is 64’9” west of a steel post that secures a trash receptacle and 75’6” west of the nest steel post to the south.

General Course Description

The runners start from behind the fire station going northbound on the street portion of the course and follow that street passing the finish line and turning left (west) passing 1K and then left (south) at the zoo property. At the triangle the runners bear left on the triangle then turn right (west) on Old Forest Ln passing the dog park and 2K to Veterans Plaza where they turn left (south) to Golf Dr where they turn left (east) and step left at the golf house driveway to begin running on the limestone trail which more or less parallels the street on the inside radius passing 3K, near the start and 4K. After completing a full circuit the runners step right back on to Golf Dr. at the golf house driveway and pass 5K before bearing right at another triangle taking the longer route back past the start to the Finish just north of the pavilion.
