Juneteenth is an American celebration of the end of slavery, June 19, 1865. This is Rochester NY's 1st Annual 5k race to commemorate this most imortant day in American History.
General Gordan Granger led 2000 Union soldiers to Galveston, Texas and delivered the news that all slaves were to be freed. This was 2 years after the Emancipation Praclamation. Slaves were kept unaware of their freedom from their masters. Rochester, NY home of Fredrick Douglas great leader and abolishionist is a perfect place to hold a race to commemorate this date in history. A 5k race is a great way to highlight this historical date when approximately 182,566 americans were finally freed. We are not free until all are free. Linking Juneteenth Celebration to Teen Empowerment makes perfect sense.
