 10K/5K Course Information

Setting the Pace at Whitten Center will be run  entirely on roads on facility property.  Runners in the 5K will remain in the heart of the scenic residential facility.  There is one hill on this route to offer a bit of challenge.  The 10K route will take runners through old pastures and lovely woods.  It then passes our once fully operational farm before turning around at the picnic shelter at Lawson Lake.  This course offers a challenging hill climb on both the out and back legs in addition to the smaller hill near the finish.  Runners will be able to enjoy the scenery in an environment free from automobile traffic.  Many of our special residents will help at corners and water stations along with their families and our great staff.  We will be there to cheer you on !

Whitten Center & The Parents’ Club
Whitten Center is a residential facility for people with developmental disabilities. It is operated by the SC Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (SCDDSN) using a combination of sta te and federal funding. Although these funds provide more than adequate care for the resid ents of our facility, The Whitten Center Parents’ Club —a registered 501(c)3— raises money to go above and beyond the state required level of care of our folks.
All funds raised by this group of families and volunteers is used to directly benefit people living at Whitten Center. The funds provide trips, concerts, movies, parties/celebrations, Special Olympic activities, and other events. This group has also used these funds to purchase additional medical equipment, recreational supplies, and a lift bus.
