Description

"Going the Extra Mile"

We are paying tribute to our friend and fellow firefighter Jon Schondelmayer who spent 20 years working his way through almost every station before passing in December of 2013 in a line of duty-related death.  In it's first year this grassroots event was open to only 75 runners from the Fire Department community but last year it was open to the public with over 250!

Proceeds from this year's race will also go to help set up a Project Lifesaver Program, supporting Triangle Miracle League Baseball, and hosting camp experiences for autistic children.

The event has FIVE race options:

  • Full Marathon (26.2 miles + Extra Mile): starts at Fire House 6 (Hwy Ten Ten and Kildare Farm Rd) and finishes at Fire House 8 (Mills Park Rd. and Green Level Church Rd.). Race individually or as a relay team (2-7 runners).
  • Half-Marathon (13.1 miles + Extra Mile): starts near Fire House 1 (N. Harrison and Cary Pkwy) and finishes at Fire House 8. Race individually or as a relay team (2-3 runners).
  • 10K (10K & no extra mile): starts at Fire House 5 (on High House Rd.) and finishes at Fire House 8.

Both the full and half-marathon runners will get to join the Cary Fire Department in their tradition of "going the extra mile."

Relay team members don't need to sign up together all at once. They can sign up individually so long as they select the team name the first person who signed up created (first person pays the registration fee too!). We believe that he who pays gets to pick the team name!

The course winds through greenways and streets alike. The course not only visits almost every Cary fire station you'll also get to actually run through several of the fire station truck bays. All fire stations will act as both rest and accountability stops.

NOTE: Roads ands crossings will not be closed to traffic. Follow all pedestrian rules. Look for course marshals in yellow shirts to provide directions.

Have questions about the race? Please read this Q&A.
