Description

"We each give a little and it can add up to a whole lot!"

Many of us are feeling helpless as we watch the horrific scenes on the news of the devastation in Houston, Florida and the fires in the Gorge, Oregon, California and Montana.

We want to do something so we are hosting this event to help raise funds for the victims. We talked to the Red Cross and they informed us that the most important action we can take is to raise money versus supplies. So we are going to have Red Cross representatives on site to collect all donations that will go directly to help those affected by this tragedy.

We chose Sunday September 17th since many in our community were planning on running VUM/Vancouver USA race anyways so it can be a way to honor VUM and everything that event has done for our community and assure you don't put all that training to waste while doing something really great for those in need. We can do something spectacular...where our running and walking community still gets together, we get our run or walk in and do something pretty AMAZING!

Warehouse '23, adjacent to our start/finish area, will offer a $20 brunch for all of us after our runs and will donate 50% of the money directly to the American Red Cross to help the victims! The brunch will include bottomless Mimosas, Bloody Marys and Deschutes Brewery Beer...the bottomless part is within reason - that warning is for the Chuggers!! Lol! Thanks Mark Mathias, Ali, Sunny and the crew at Warehouse 23! This just keeps getting better!

Please share this event with all your running and walking buddies or anyone who just wants to do something to help!

ps. If you want to help but aren't able to attend, you can still register and make a donation and do your run virtually wherever you will be. You don’t have to be present with us to help us make a huge impact!

Event details and schedule

WHAT: Run for America - A fun run or walk to raise funds for the Victims in Houston, Florida and those suffering from the fires in the Gorge, Oregon, California and Montana. We will provide 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon course maps so you can do whatever distance you want. You can even choose a completely different course or do the VUM Marathon course if you want! It's important to understand that this event will be non-supported which means you will need to obey all traffic signals and you'll need to carry your own hydration/electrolytes/fuel. We will provide you course maps and will keep the courses relatively simple to assure no one gets lost. This will be a NO-FRILLS event (but if you know us, you know we'll try to do something to take care of all of you!)

WHEN:Sunday September 17th starting at 9am. Please arrive by 8:30am at the latest for instructions and to register, sign the waiver and provide your donation to the American Red Cross if you have not done it online.

WHERE: Start at the Amphitheater beside Warehouse 23,
100 Columbia St
Vancouver, WA 98660

COST: By donation. Give whatever you can. American Cross Representatives will be onsite to collect donations.

WHY? Because people in the Northwest care and want to help!

Courses: The 5K course will be flat and scenic along the Columbia River Waterfront Trail past Beaches to the end of the Trail and back. The 10K course will continue past Beaches through Marine Park to just prior to Water Resource Center and back. The Half Marathon will continue past Water Resource Center past Wintler Park, over the Railway tracks, up the big hill on Beach Drive, right onto Riverside, Left onto State, Right onto Old Evergreen Highway until the turnaround just prior to 97th. We will create maps with word descriptions also that we will hand out that morning prior to the run/walk and we will use chalk at some of the important junctions to assure you don't get lost. Also feel free to turnaround whenever you want. This is a non-timed event so you don't have to follow any specific course. It's all about the cause! Remember that this event is not permitted or marshaled so you are required to obey all traffic laws and you are required to carry your own water/fuel - we want to have minimal costs so 100% of your donations can go to the American Red Cross to provide maximum help!
