Description

The Main Event:

The Mercer County Education Association is excited to announce an amazing Halloween event that will make one lucky teacher and his or her students monstrously happy! The first annual Monster Dask 5k Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run will be held in conjunction with the City of Bluefield Parks and Recreation’s Trunk or Treat on October 28, 2017. Both events will take place at Bluefield City Park. Registration for the race begins at 3:00 p.m. and the race begins at 5:00 p.m. An awards ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. Proceeds from the race, up to $500, will be awarded to a Mercer County Schools teacher to be used for a field trip. Any money raised in excess of $500 will go towards future field trip grants or giveaways for Mercer County Schools teachers. In other words, all money raised will go directly to the teachers and students of Mercer County.

Information for Race Participants:

This is no ordinary race! Participants seeking an additional Halloween thrill can run through a “Monster Dash Zone” as they complete three laps around Bluefield City Park. Monsters and other creatively costumed volunteers await runners in the dash zone to chase and interact with the runners; however, there will be a safe route marked through the Monster Dash Zone for runners who do not wish to participate in that part of the race. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

Participants can register and pay online:

http://www.active.com/bluefield-wv/running/distance-running-races/monster-dash-5k-2017

The pre-registration fee is $20 for adults and $10 for students under 15. The registration fee on race day for adults is $25. T-Shirts are guaranteed to participants who register by October 12. Some extra t-shirts will be available on race day, but sizes and quantity cannot be guaranteed.

Awards will be granted to the overall winners of the 5k run, top runners in each age group, and overall winners of the 5k walk. In addition, awards will be granted to the top three costumes.

About the Cause:

The Mercer County Education Association understands the importance of real-world experiences for children and young adults. Year after year, public schools have been hit with budget cut after budget cut. Sometimes when budgets are scant, important activities and experiences can be left by the wayside. Field trips to interesting and educational places are invaluable to the students of Mercer County Schools, yet fundraising for these trips can be burdensome and stressful to the teachers. Though many teachers in Mercer County Schools work very hard to take their students on field trips, it is a difficult goal to accomplish. The Mercer County Education Association hopes to make that easier for at least one teacher this year (and if all goes well, even more in the future!).
