_ The 8th Annual Family Jewels 5K:

The Family Jewels 5KTM is an annual 5K trail run/1-mile trail walk in memory of Bothell XC runner and WSU rower Jaimeson Jones.  Jaimeson died on October 7, 2010, at the age of 20, of a recurrence of testicular cancer. He was first diagnosed at just 14 years old.

The Family Jewels 5KTM funds the Jaimeson Jones Memorial Scholarship, which provides at least $3,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, to local graduating high school students who plan to further their education and who have had a sibling with cancer.  Our inspiration for these recipients was Jaimeson himself, who bequeathed his college savings to his two younger sisters, understanding very well the financial devastation his illness had caused the family.  

In 2017, we awarded three scholarships to graduating Northshore School District students - come meet Hailey, Ryan and Alexandra!!

We have raised our fundraising goal to $40,000 this year, because our total commitment to Hailey, Ryan and Alexandra during their four college years is $40,000 ($10,000 per year total, renewable for the remaining three years).

Let's fulfill our promise to these local kids!  Bring your friends, family, kids and dogs to bring awareness to early detection of testicular cancer in a family-oriented fun run, walk, or stroll. We’re the #only5kwithapietable!  Not to mention other snacks, coffee, cocoa ...  :)

 *About testicular cancer*

Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer in men between 15 and 44, and it is 95% curable IF it is caught early.  Because he was embarrassed about the pain and swelling in his testicle and did not realize that these symptoms indicated cancer, Jaimeson did not alert his family to his pain and swelling for over a year, and his cancer was diagnosed very late.  This meant that Jaimeson was faced with agonizing treatment and a poor prognosis for recovery.  When his cancer recurred at age 19, Jaimeson ran out of treatment options, and he died at 20.

Caring for a child with cancer devastates a family not only emotionally but financially.  In our case, one of the many financial consequences was insufficient funds to pay for Jaimeson’s younger sisters to attend college.

Our scholarship mission was inspired by Jaimeson himself, who bequeathed his college savings to his sisters.
