_ The 2018 Tackle Trauma 5K:

What is the Arizona Trauma Association? The Arizona Trauma Association (ATA) is a non-profit organization comprised of Arizona’s trauma centers. Trauma Centers are specialized centers within hospitals that are equipped and staffed to care for severely injured patients where there is an immediate issue of survival. ATA strives to improve the delivery of this trauma care through education, collaborative research, and injury prevention/outreach activities.

What is Tackle Trauma? Tackle Trauma is ATA’s annual fundraising activity. Held in Tempe, AZ on Super Bowl© Sunday, the 2018 event marks our fourth year! The 5k course is great way to start your football Sunday with family–we’ve got activities for the kids including face-painting and a bouncy house! The moderate-level course runs on the east side of Papago Park at 1350 N. College Avenue. See the map for exact start/finish information and contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions!

What is the raised money being used for? In May, 2017, ATA launched an injury prevention initiative which raised awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Families, friends, and trauma centers in Arizona are all too familiar with the tragedies of distracted driving. Targeting audiences from ”pre-drivers” through 50+ y/o, the ATA “Distracted Driving Kills” campaign was featured on 6 digital billboards between May 29 and Jun 29, 2017, across metropolitan Phoenix, AZ, and was displayed to over 1 MILLION drivers each week!

Also in 2017, monies raised through Tackle Trauma 5k helped fund the Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF) scholarship program. AMSAF promotes motorcycle safety and awareness through education, collaboration with the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, and the Arizona Motorcycle Safety Advisory. AMSAF’s Basic Rider Course is a complete entry-level, learn-to-ride class that consists of at least 15 hours of formal classroom activities and on-cycle riding exercises conducted over two or three days. This valuable education helps keep Arizona’s roads safe for two- and four-wheeled drivers!

Who is affected by trauma? Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for all children and adults up to age 46! Whether it’s a car crash or a fall from a ladder, countless people and their families are affected by trauma. All verified trauma centers are held to the highest standards of care and must also provide certain programs within their hospital and to their communities in order to maintain their verification status.  Receiving care from a trauma center can significantly lower the risk of death.
