Registration is now open for Marine Mammals of Maine's (MMoME) first annual OCEAN COMMO-TION 5K RUN/WALK! The amazing venue for this event is at Hermit Island in Phippsburg, ME on October 24, 2015 at 9:30am. The scenic 5K route takes participants on trails overlooking the ocean, away from vehicle traffic. If you're not a runner or walker, there will be other activities to engage the entire family in learning about marine mammal stranding/response/rescue, plus fun activities for the children. We will have refresh-ments available, as well as a raffle with many awesome items. In addition, there will be a booth with infor-mation about MMoME, our mission, work, and future goals.
OCEAN COMMOTION will be our MMoME's largest fundraiser of the year, helping to ensure that re-sponse/rescue and assistance can continue, as well as allowing us to continue to provide public education about marine animals and the environment. As with many non-profits, we have limited funds that will support only a fraction of our operational budget. Financial support is critical for the continued success of MMoME.
In case you're not familiar with Marine Mammals of Maine and what we do.... We're a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization dedicated to responding to stranded marine animals from Kittery to Rockland, ME, and is the sole stranding response organization in this area. We provide a call center and dispatch that op-erates 24/7 for people to report a distressed seal, dolphin, whale or porpoise. Working with partner organiza-tions, we provide a critical link, often the first step, in assisting abandoned, injured, sick, or out of habitat ani-mals. Since January of 2015 we have responded to over 200 animals. Often these animals have suffered from human interference and require assistance to return back healthy to the ocean. The majority of our stranding response personnel are volunteers.
