2020 Leonide J Lemire 4.9 Mile Road Race:
This Independence Day running a race dedicated to one of our fallen heroes might be a great activity to do to start your holiday festivities. The Leonide J. Lemire Road Race is a 4.9 mile run starting at 9:00am on Everett Street at the YMCA.
Leonide was the first Southbridge resident to die in service in World War II. Lemire was in the Navy and was a Seaman First Class on the U.S.S West Virginia. He lost his life on that ship when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Lemire lived on Charlton Street and died at the young age of twenty-four years old.
This race is the second or third oldest continually run race in the country, the Boston Marathon being the first. Be part of this rich tradition and honor those that have served our country. Truly the United States is the home of the free because of the brave.
