_ The 4th Annual Suffer Better Fall Trail Run:
The rascally COVID Pandemic has dramatically altered the event landscape for 2020, requiring us to rethink the where and how to manage our annual Fall trail run. As a result of the need for a major change in logistics, the 4th Annual Suffer Better Trail Run (the Run) will be held at Staunton State Park off of Highway 285 on October 10, 2020. The change in location not only simplifies our (and your) parking and transport needs, but also enables us to put on a race that will comply with all necessary health protocols. In addition, we are excited to be able to extend our race distance, this year enabling runners to test their mettle over darn-near 30K– 16.3 – miles on beautiful mountain trails in one of Colorado's best mountain parks.
Race Date: Saturday, October 10, 2020.
Start Time: Racers will start in waves of 20 racers, waves starting every 10 minutes, seeded by estimated finish time, with the first wave starting at 8 am and the last kicking off at 9 am. You will be asked to provide your estimated finish time during registration - please be as accurate as you can.
COVID Protocols: The hardest part of all this is limiting all of our ability to gather and hang out, one of our favorite pieces of putting on these events. Sadly, under the current guidelines, we need to require the following:
No pre-race congregating.
Racers will stay in their cars – or at least well away from the start line – until their wave is about to be called.
Masks must be worn while checking in, awaiting the start and at all times when around the group. Masks should also be worn on the trail when within 6 feet of the nearest runner. There will also be other trail users, so be respectful of them too and use your mask when others are in the vicinity.
Runners must provide their own masks and bottles.
Volunteers will fill bottles at the aid station and set out bars. Volunteers, at the S/F and at the aid stations, will wear masks and gloves at all times.
The course will start and finish at the Mason Creek parking lot. The course: Mason Creek to Bear Paw to Mason Creek to Old Mill to Borderline Trail to Bugling Elk Trail to Marmot Passage Trail to Staunton Ranch Trail to lower Dines Meadow Trail to the finish at Mason Creek. Total Distance: 16.3 Miles. You can download the Staunton Trail Map here: https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Staunton/Documents/StauntonTrailsMap.pdf
Aid Stations: One at the Old Mill site (water, hydration, bars) and one at the intersection of Marmot Passage and Staunton Ranch Trail.
Race Entry: $65
Like last year, this year's event is both a race and an effort to raise awareness and funds to preserve and protect our precious public lands and improve the quality of our life-sustaining air and water. Runners have the ability to raise funds themselves for Conservation CO and/or Protect Our Winters.
We will be cup-free again this year, so bring your bottles!
