Description

_ The 2021 Dip & Dash Swim-Run:

We're back - as the first official triathlon event in Santa Cruz County in 2021!  There are (of course) some changes due to COVID-19 requirements.  So be sure you read the list below so you can be prepared when you register and arrive for the event.  As we all know, things can be pretty fluid in this environment and we'll update you with any changes and details as we get closer to the event.

What's the same?  It's an aquathlon - swim & run event.  Think triathlon without the bike!  There are two individual distances for the event.  The two distances are 1500 meter swim/4 mile run and a 750 meter swim/4 mile run.

If you're looking to practice - you can swim two loops around the buoys at Cowell Beach and run up West Cliff to Getchell Street and back to the beach for the longer distance.  One loop around the buoys and up to Getchell and back for the shorter distance.

What's different for this year?  Pretty much everything else.

Registration

  • Registration limit of 150 inclusive of both distances.
  • All registrants must be California residents
  • Registration must be completed online, in advance.
  • If the event is not sold out and there are race weekend or race day registrations available they must be completed on the athlete’s own phone without any physical touching of paper or race packets prior to distribution to the athlete.
  • All athlete check-in will be done electronically with no paper/pen usage except as required by staff.
  • All athletes will be required to complete the USAT Athlete COVID Health Questionnaire, present it for visual review and drop it in a box prior to proceeding to packet pickup.

Start & Finish

  • There will be a time trial start instead of a mass start.  Additionally, there will be three corral windows to select for your start time.  That will enable to swimmers to choose between an estimated fast, medium, or slower swim time.  When you register you will be asked to make the following selection:
    • 8:00 am fastest swim for 1500m swim
    • 8:10 am medium swim for 1500m swim
    • 8:20 am slower swimmers for 1500m swim
    • 8:30 am for fastest swim for 750m swim
    • 8:40 am for medium swim for 750m swim
    • 8:50 am slower swimmers for 750m swim
  • This start time scenario will allow us to spread swimmers out throughout the first hour and also create more room in transition.  You can arrive closer to your swim start if you want, and you don't have to worry about an arbitrary or mandatory transition closure.
  • Depending on the status of Tier Levels and expected state opening there may or may not be an awards ceremony at the end of the event.  We will make that call closer to the event and mail awards if necessary.

USAT's Safe Return to Racing protocols will be followed throughout the event.

Standard PPE and Social Distancing will be required of all race participants volunteers, spectators, and staff during the event. Failure to comply will result in denied access to the event.  City/County health ordinances will guide the use of PPE in specific locations on the date of the event at the appropriate tier level.

  • All participants will be required to wear face masks at all times within the event venue except during competition.
  • All volunteers will be required to wear face masks and/or face shields and gloves within the event venue depending on position and responsibilities.  This includes packet pick-up, registration, course, aid stations and finish line area.  Each area may have different requirements depending on the role.
  • Spectators will be required to wear face masks.   Spectators will be allowed in limited locations outside the perimeter of the event (i.e. outside the fenced areas).   They will not be allowed to congregate at the finish line.
  • Social distancing and hand sanitizing practices must be followed.

Volunteers

There will be limited volunteer placement on the course in order to maintain social distancing but not at the expense of runner safety.  However, family and friends of athletes are encouraged to help out at the start and finish lines in order to see and support your athletes.  You may also want to volunteer at the aid-station turnaround as an opportunity to cheer runners.  Athletes will be able to follow the arrows and signs on the out and back run course.

Supporting Polio Plus

Proceeds from this event will support Rotary International's Polio Plus Program.  This horrible disease was the last worldwide epidemic and most of us don't remember it because we haven't had a polio case in the US since the 70s.  But that's not the case in other parts of the world.  Not only that, but Polio Plus has also using it's infrastructure to support COvid-19 vaccinations around the world.  I major effort that needs much more support!  You can read more about Polio Plus by clicking on the menu link at the top of the page.

INDIVIDUAL SWIM - RUN EVENTS

There are two distances of swim-run events for this race in 2021.

  • 750m Swim and a 4 Mile Run
  • 1500m Swim and a 4 Mile Run
