_The 2021 The Sam Lapidus Montclair Run:

The Levite Jewish Community Center is thrilled to welcome the community back, in person, for the 45th annual Sam Lapidus Montclair Run. The SLMR started in 1976 as the Montclair Run, and quickly grew in popularity throughout the state. Now hosting approximately 1500 runners of all ages, the SLMR serves as a Thanksgiving tradition for many families and out-of-town visitors. The SLMR is the largest annual fundraising event supporting the LJCC.

In 2009 the run was renamed to honor Sam Lapidus. Sam lost his battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of childhood cancer, in November 2008 - just nine days before his 15th birthday. Five dollars of every runner's registration is donated to the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama in Sam’s memory.

Become a Fundraiser

Through this race, we offer two options for individuals to fundraise, and we hope you will help us make the biggest impact possible. During the registration process, you will have the opportunity to create a personal fundraising page or start/join a fundraising team. You may become a fundraiser for the LJCC's Pavilions and Pools campaign or the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.

The choice is yours!

  • Choose the Levite Jewish Community Center's Pavilions and Pools campaign to put your efforts towards our community at the J.
  • Choose the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders and your fundraising efforts will go to help to find a cure for childhood cancer.

Not interested in running? You can still donate or become a fundraiser to support the Levite Jewish Community Center or the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.

About the Levite Jewish Community Center

The LJCC is the only Jewish community center in the state of Alabama, drawing an estimated 10,000 individuals annually of all races, ethnicities, and faiths at all stages of life to its 380,657 square-foot fitness, aquatics, and education center. Thirty percent of its membership identifies as Jewish while the remaining 70% includes members of all faiths.

The LJCC’s mission is to offer opportunities for those in the greater Birmingham community to be well—in mind, body, and soul—in an inclusive, safe, and enriching environment. The traditional fitness services include personal training, fitness classes, and sports leagues. The LJCC also provides high quality preschool through the Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center, summer Camp LJCC for K-8th graders, and youth sports. Special events, like Thursday Family Fun Nights at the outdoor pool, a Jewish Food and Culture Fest, and the annual Thanksgiving Day Sam Lapidus Montclair 5k and 10k runs, are open to the public. Partnerships with area organizations enable the LJCC to offer direct crisis-relief services like emergency shelter and food distribution. The LJCC is a United Way organization and receives support through the Birmingham Jewish Federation.
