Hardest Road 8k in the WORLD & Leg Busting 8 Mile Trail Run

Sassafras Mountain - Rocky Bottom Retreat Center

  Come run a scenic 8k or 8mile race that summits Sassafras Mountain!  From the Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center we will climb 5 miles to the HIGHEST PEAK in South Carolina! Sassafras Mountain stands at 3,554 feet above sea level and edges the North/South Carolina state line border! This will serve as the toughest road race in the state and you will get a front row view of the most beautiful overlooks in the entire state as you reach the lookout tower! Shuttles will be available and will depart every 10 minutes from the Sassafras mountain top back down the Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center.   Welcome to the Upstate Ultra Trail Series brought to you by the South Carolina Ultra Marathon Club. We are proud to bring in a series of events that range in distance, terrain, and season! But each race will always posses the same energy and positive atmosphere from our staff, volunteers, and S.C.U.M. Runners. Race Information

• Where: Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center - 123 Hancock Rd, Sunset, SC 29685
• When: Feb 4th 2023
• Packet Pickup: 1 Hour Prior to your race start time near starting line
• Overall Awards for overall will be given out at the conclusion of the race
• Age group winners will be recognized in the results tab and our point series.
• Aid Station: We will have water at the top of the mountain

  • 5 Miles on ROAD all the way to the top of Sassafras Mountain! 
    • Course Map HERE - Elevation Gain - 2000 Feet

• Sassafras 8 Mile 10:00am 

  • Includes 5 Miles on the Road to the top of Sassafras Mountain and then a 2 mile section of the Foothills Trail down to the road before heading back to the Rocky Bottom Center Finish.

Race Awards

• Top 3 Male and Female will receive a custom hand made award!

Aid Station

We will not have any aid stations along the course but we will have water at the top and hot cocoa at the bottom. Please bring all the nutritional items you will need for the duration of the race.   

Drop Bag

If you would like to have some warm clothes waiting for you at the top please place your drop bag into the white van that will be heading up to the top of the mountain prior to the start of the race.
